GLP-1 Weight Regain: Why 'It's Working' Isn't the Same as 'It's Sustainable'

New research shows most GLP-1 weight loss doesn't hold after stopping. Here's the real difference between medication working and a lifestyle that's sustainable.
The Truth About the Number on the Scale vs. What's Actually Holding It There
The scale moving is proof the medication is doing its job. It's not proof the result will still be there in two years.
In the STEP 1 extension trial, participants who stopped semaglutide regained roughly two-thirds of the weight they'd lost within one year (weight maintenance findings summarized in recent obesity medicine research, 2025). A separate large real-world analysis of over 188,000 patients found that at two years after stopping the medication, several participants had regained most or all of what they'd lost, though a smaller segment of the participants also sustained real results, largely tied to what changed in their day-to-day habits during treatment, not just the medication itself (Epic Research, 2025).
One of our core coaching pillars is built around the pursuit of health, not the pursuit of a number. A number that requires ongoing medication to hold isn't unstable because the medication is bad, it's unstable because the process lacks a solid foundation to hold the number on its own.
Working vs Sustainable
IT'S WORKING' MEANS
The scale is moving in the direction you want
Appetite feels quieter, food feels less consuming
The medication is doing exactly what it's designed to do
'IT'S SUSTAINABLE' MEANS
The eating pattern holds with or without the medication
Movement and structure exist independent of appetite level
The result doesn't depend on staying on the prescription indefinitely
The Reframe We Want You to Sit With
Health as a daily, lifelong pursuit, built on small things, intentionally implemented consistently, lets sustainable results take care of themselves, whether or not medication is part of the picture.
A GLP-1 can be a real, legitimate tool. It was never meant to be the whole plan.
Our Ask of You on On or Off GLP-1s
Most people track the scale and stop there, because the scale is the easiest thing to check. This week, track one habit instead, something you're doing regardless of appetite, like a daily protein target or a consistent bedtime. That's the number that actually predicts whether this holds.
Structure over struggle, always.
